Having decided to visit Wanaka during the ski season, you decide that perhaps you should lend your hand at skiing or snowboarding. Will being a beginner be a disadvantage? Especially in Wanaka which is popular with advanced skiers for the steep slopes and racing tracks? Definitely not, there are specific ski fields and gentle wide open slopes that are tailor made for those of you who have never skied before. So read on to find out about where you can ski in Wanaka and what you need to know.

Wanaka has two main skiing fields – Treble Cone and Cardrona whose ski season opens around late June and goes through to late September.

Treble Cone Ski Field has a wide range of terrain to suit all ages and skill levels. Newbie’s will appreciate the purpose built learners area which has a magic carpet lift and is located close to the base building. Learners will find that the area has a smooth slope with an easy gradient that is groomed every night. As you build up your confidence you can use the magic carpet lift to make your way further up the slope. Wanaka’s Treble Cone also offers a ski and snowboarding school. Depending on the time you have available to learn, you can enlist in a half day lesson right through to a full on five day camp, in order to build up your skill set and confidence on the snow.

Treble Cone ski field offers first time skiers and snowboarders a ‘First Timer Package’ which includes everything you need to get going such as a lift pass, skis / boots / poles or a snowboard / boots and a group lesson(s). All you need to bring is suitable clothing such as ski jackets and pants, (although you can hire these too if you wish) and to arrange transport to the ski field. Instructors are available daily to help get you familiar with the beginners run.

Cardrona ski field is also a fantastic mountain for learners, again with gentle wide open slopes. If you are starting out at Cardrona you will want to get in contact with the Cardrona Instructor Training Centre which has some of the most experienced ski and snowboard trainers in New Zealand. The centre offers a range of courses to suit individual budgets and time-frames from weekend training through to 10 week full time courses.

You can hire all your clothing and rental ski equipment at Cardrona Alpine Resort, who have specific beginners’ skis and snowboards to start out on. Be sure to check out their range of package options available which include lift tickets, lesson & rental equipment.

So make the most of your time during the ski season in Wanaka and give skiing or snowboarding a go. You can rest assured that you will have access to professional skiing and snowboard instructors plus gentle, easy slopes that have been designed especially for beginners to practice on.
